Home Remedies for Gout

One way of treating gout is by the use of home based remedies; these remedies work by relieving pain in the joint that has suffered a gout attack and also reducing the amount of uric acid in your body which is the main cause of gout.

Not all chemical based medicines produce satisfactory results that people expect therefore more and more people are turning to the use of home remedies to treat gout. Some of the advantages that make people opt for home remedies in treatment of gout is that they are very affordable, safe and do not cause adverse side effects like some of the gout medications.

Here are a number of home remedies that you can use for treating gout

a) Use of either cooling or heating compresses on the affected joint

This is one of the simplest home remedies that you can use to reduce the pain that results from a gout attack. The remedy works by relaxing the tissues around the joint and encouraging blood circulation in the affected area. You can alternate between the cold and hot compresses in intervals of 20 minutes for better results.

b) Use of cherries in treating gout

Cherries are known to be one of the effective home remedies for gout. Recent research studies indicate that an antioxidant called anthocyanins which is contained in cherries reduces the frequency at which you can get gout attacks as well as relieving the inflammations that occur on the affected area. You can eat about 15 cherries or more each day and gradually reduce their consumption as the gout subsides. Another great option is making a juice out of the cherries and drinking it regularly. You are advised to use fresh cherries and avoid consuming canned cherries which may contain preservatives and other kinds of chemicals.

c) Treating gout with apples

Apples contain an acid known as malic acid; this acid has been shown to counteract the effects caused by uric acid and neutralize the uric acid in your body.  Eating them after your meals is recommended. As it is said, one apple a day keeps the doctor away.

d) Baking soda (also bicarbonate of soda)

This is a home remedy that you can easily make to treat the pain associated with a gout attack.

This remedy performs two functions:

  1. Dissolving the tiny crystals that have formed in your joints.
  2. Facilitate the excretion of uric acid from your body by increasing its solubility.

Mix half a teaspoon of baking soda with a glass of water then drink the mixture, preferably one glass in the morning and another before going to sleep. You can also drink other glasses of this mixture during the day but avoid using more than 3 teaspoons of baking soda in a day. This remedy will also require cutting back on your salt intake because it contains high amounts of sodium.

Use of lime to treat gout

Lime is also an option in treatment of gout. Limes are a great source of vitamin C which is good for strengthening various supportive tissues in the body; vitamin C also assists in prevention and treatment of pain in joints.  Limes also contain citric acid which helps in neutralizing uric acid in your body. This simple home remedy can be made by squeezing lime juice into a glass of water then taking the healthy drink at least 2 times a day.

Treatment of gout using a vegetable juice mixture

Apart from being a boost to our immune system vegetables can also be used to treat gout. Examples of such vegetables include;

  • Beetroots
  • Carrots
  • Cucumbers

You can decide to use one of the three vegetables to make juice or combine all of them to make a cocktail; this is the best option. Take the vegetable juice regularly preferably 2-3 glasses a day.

Gout can be treated effectively with home remedies if they are used properly. You should also ensure that your diet is balanced, avoid foods that are high in purines such as seafood and meat. It is also recommended you avoid taking alcoholic drinks as they hinder home remedies from working effectively. With a little patience home remedies will alleviate the pain and get rid of the gout. However should the condition persist you should seek medical attention to prevent any damage to your joints and other organs from occurring.
